Rambling warning!!!
There are now very few shops that cater for my hobby of building model cars, but to open such a shop would be tantamount to suicide, there just isn’t enough demand, most people now are not not interested in practical skills, it’s all instant gratification, and virtual reality, so no it wouldn’t be a hobby shop.
As previously mentioned, I help out in a shop at the moment. A DIY shop in fact, business is slow, as aforementioned lack of interest in anything practical, but also the competition of internet sales. So I wouldn’t want a DIY shop either.
One thing that makes a “proper” shop different though is the interaction between the shop keeper or his staff with the customers. We are a social hub, people come for, advise, help, a shoulder to cry on or just a chat, sometimes they may actually buy something!!!!
So the kind of shop I would like, would be a coffee shop, the coffee would be free (yes that is a real word).
A little sanctuary where people could come sit talk, listen, learn and maybe listen to some Dylan, if he’d let me have a licence, I’ll ask him!
There is apparently momentum gathering that that little four letter word “Free” should be removed from the dictionary, I think the Idea was started by someone called Elon Mush aided by his friend Jeff Basics.
The Shop
Do you remember in days now long gone? Going shopping with grandma, and of course your mom. First to the bakers for your loaf of bread, then popping next door to see butcher Ted.
There was a sweet shop, and toy shop , all for the kids, and then there was hardware, that was called Sids. Sid had all sorts of things for you to amaze, paints brushes and tools, Oh happy days!
Best thing of all though was your mom and gran, could share all the gossip with whichever shopman. You all went in for goods and came out with a laugh, now we have supermarkets and come out feeling naff.
Yes, it’s nearly all gone now, another part of your life, no independent shops for you, your kids and your wife. there is one place though if you want to keep sane, a little DIY store just up Abbey Lane.
Nic that owns it, he’s such a good chap, always so busy no time for a nap, if he doesn’t have it he’ll get it for you, from a tube of sticky glue, to a lace for your shoe.
If though on Saturday you wish to visit, you’ll get his mate Bard though, and that’s not good is it? He can never find anything in Nic’s shop so cluttered, but at least you had a laugh at the jokes that he uttered.
All words Meadowhead Bard.
A little something written by Bob Dylan, from a song called “Love is just a four letter word” I don’t think I’ve ever heard Dylan sing it, but there is a beautiful cover version by Joan Baez
Seems like only yesterday I left my mind behind, down in the gypsy café with a friend of a friend of mine, who sat with a baby heavy on her knee Yet spoke of life most free from slavery With eyes that showed no trace of misery, a phrase in connection first with she occurred. That love is just a four-letter word.
Bob Dylan.
From the extract above, you may think Dylan is suggesting love is indeed just a four letter word, I don’t believe the song as a whole is offering that idea., and love being just a four letter word is certainly not my belief in either context.
