This is a subject that fascinates me. My theory is I was lucky, I was born in the mid 50s, so I grew up in the 60s and 70s. It is possible that I was protected from it but I don’t remember the all pervading aggression and violence that dominates the media now. It’s everywhere, film, books, music, social media, many sports even have their aggressive side, just study some of those victory gestures, what do think they represent? Then there was the kind of music of my early years, peace, love and anti war. Yes, there were Mod’s and Rockers and that kind of thing, but nothing like we have now.
There were mainly three musicians that helped shape the attitudes I have today, Cat Steven’s and Tom Paxton, but mainly Bob Dylan. Their songs gave me my sense of justice and fairness.
So compare that to the influences of today, is it any wonder there are guns and knives in the hands of children, that many have no respect for life ?
So why don’t our leaders put legislation in place to control the amount of violence in our media. The answer, they need it to be so, populations have to be inured to violence, otherwise who would fight the wars.. It’s escalated out of control now and the cat cannot be put back in the bag.
We tried to keep our two boys away from violent toys etc, prohibiting toy guns, swords etc, for birthdays and Christmas, but when video games arrived it became impossible. Fortunately we must have done enough they both turned out Ok.
Sing Me a Song.
Dear Mr Leader and Mr religious man,
I’m not your puppet, and certainly no fan,
You won’t corrupt me with your rants and speeches,
I don’t follow parasites and leeches.
Don’t sing me me your song of hate and violence,
All I want from you is silence,
Take all your hate and vitriol,
Take it all with you down to hell.
Sing me a song of peace and love,
I don’t need guidance from above,
Sing me a song of right not wrong,
I will live my life like that song.
Sing me a song of peace not war,
One that tells me what life is for.
Sing me a song of friendship and peace,
A song to teach war can finally cease.
All words Meadowhead Bard.
