An old girl friend once said to me “If you like Bob Dylan you’ll like Leonard Cohen” That’s true to a certain extent, Cohen has written some beautiful songs, but as some say they can’t tolerate Dylan’s voice, that slow drawl of cohen irks me. Songs such as “Hallelujah” but even more to my taste “Suzanne Takes you down” Again like many prefer covers of Dylan’s work, I prefer covers of Cohens, one in particular stands out for me “Suzanne takes you down” sung by Joan Baez.
I heard a story once of a conversation between Dylan and Cohen, please forgive if I don’t have all the details correct but you’ll get the gist, Dylan to Cohen “I love your song “ Hallelujah” Cohen “ That took me six months to write” Cohen “ I love your song “I and I” ” Dylan “Oh that took me 15 minutes”
”Black bird in the meadow, across the broad highway, you know it funny honey I don’t feel much like a scarecrow today” From “Black Crow Blues” Another Side of Bob Dylan album.
I declare today international bird day (If there already isn’t one)
BORD ON THE LINE.
There’s a bird on the line
I listen to his troubles, he listens to mine
That bird he’s cold out there in the frost
I’m out here cold and totally lost
Kindred spirits are little bird and me
Both fighting in our own way to be free
He wants to be free of the cold and the rain
I want to free from a world of people insane
Bird has predators buzzard, sparrow hawk, and cat
I have my own, scammers, cheats and political diktat
The bird he can rise above and sing so sweet
Sometimes I can barely rise to my feet
Feathers or skin we are akin
We’re still at the mercy of the enemy within
Predators hover, he can take flight
I’m forever quoted “You don’t have the right”

PS, I find it sweetly odd that my little personal story yesterday captured my audiences imagination, I was afraid most may have found it boring.
Thank you.
