We don’t call them High Schools in the UK. When I was at school kid it would have been Secondary Modern. Not really a place of learning, just somewhere where one had to go, on the pretext of learning.
I thought I’d lost the little story below, it was one of the first things I’d ever written.
Not something I learned at school, but later in life, that this world is hugely over populated by humans.
AN ANALOGY.
Adam and Eve, considered themselves very lucky, they lived in their dream house, there just wasn’t another one like it and the rent was quite low, they had plenty of space, a large garden where they grew vegetables, and flowers, they kept a few chickens, and even had there own well, the landlord had fitted solar panels, all in all they where more or less self sufficient. They had lived their a few years when they decided to have a child, and soon they were blessed with a daughter they named her Modesty, because that’s how they lived, modestly.
Time went by, Adam, Eve and Modesty were happy in their little world, until one day they received a letter from their landlord Mr Greedyman. In the letter Mr Greedyman declared his intention to move into the attic rooms, and take in more lodgers, he explained, he just wasn’t making enough money out of the house, but not to worry, he would be very selective, and after all there was plenty of room in the house.
So a new couple soon moved in, they were very nice, Modesty liked them and she soon had a little playmate. However the landlord wasn’t satisfied and he soon sent another couple to live in the house, now things were beginning to get a bit cramped, food from the garden had to be rationed out, Adam and Eve tried forcing the crops in their greenhouse but they just didn’t taste the same.
Despite Adam and Eve’s protestations Mr Greedyman kept sending more and more tenants, and there were more and more babies appearing every month, a lot of the tenants had dogs too, and it began to smell. Food and water were now in very short supply, quarrelling and fights began to break out, Mr Greedyman was worried it may affect his peace on the top floor, so he came up with the idea of telling the tenants he had powerful friends, and if they did not behave and abide by the rules bad things would happen to them. This worked for while, but soon the occupants began to ague and fight as to how to interpret the house rules, and not upset Mr Greedyman’s peace and quiet. The landlord’s next plan, was to introduce television and a few other devises of a distracting nature, this worked for a while, but it was getting so crowded in the house that tenants even started arguing about what was shown on the TV screen, and sending nasty messages to each other on there new devises, Mr Greedyman could hack into these messages so he knew what was going on.
There now was hardly any space in the house, no privacy, no freedom, everyone thought they where being watched all the time. The air became thick and polluted, illnesses were getting common, and they spread like wildfire through the tightly pact inhabitants.
Mr Greedyman didn’t much care, he cared only for himself and his wealth. He gave the tenants access to medicines, he didn’t want his tenants dying, he would lose income and there may be an uprising. He had looked for somewhere else to live, but time was running short, he could see things where going to boil over, if things didn’t stabilise he was going to have to start to thin the inmates out.
Mr Greedyman needn’t have worried, a new and more serious illness soon took hold, he was soon left on his own, but it wasn’t long before he himself succumbed to the illness.
The house was empty of people now, but wildlife soon took over, and they, although not as intelligent, as the people, lived in balance and harmony.
